The Slough office takes on the employees from the Swindon branch and David immediately butts heads with his new boss, the charismatic Neil. When David tells a racist joke to ingratiate himself with the new staff, he ends up in hot water.
At staff appraisal time, Tim reveals he wants to go back to school to study psychology, while Dawn dreams of becoming a children’s illustrator. Meanwhile, David takes the new employees out to lunch in an attempt to win them over.
The staff celebrates Trudy’s birthday with a raucous and ribald party. Meanwhile, David escalates his war with Neil, but gets an ego boost when headhunters from a public speaking agency arrive and want to hire him.
Gareth catches Tim locking lips with Rachel and immediately grows jealous of them; David has his first public speaking engagement and manages to make a mess of the whole thing, thanks to a new earring, an undershirt and a boombox.
