When 66 safe deposit boxes are robbed in Brussels, Police Inspector Paul Gerardi discovers that the victims are all members of a mysterious elite organization called Salamander, and their stolen secrets could bring down the entire country.
A robbery at the Bank of Jonkhere results in the theft of 66 safe deposit boxes owned by Belgian society’s elite. The bank and the Attorney General attempt a cover-up but then small-time Brussels detective Paul Gerardi starts his own investigation.
Paul Gerardi hides out at a monastery, as his wife and daughter are repeatedly intimidated by the employees of procurator-general Persigal. But, Paul’s fortunes change when he discovers a new lead in the case which points him to a senator.
Gerardi’s refusal to believe the official story about the bank robbery results in his suspension by the commissioner. The Bank hopes the cover-up is now under control, but Gerardi discovers a trail that leads to a potential informant.
Sofie runs away from home after realizing the truth about her mother’s affair and goes to the police to speak to her father. However, Gerardi is now in the hands of Persigal, as they persuade him to catch the bank robbers in deepest secrecy.
After Gerardi is betrayed by his friend, he finds the net is closing around him. Meanwhile, the members of Salamander receive envelopes with copies of the sensitive material stolen from them; they realize someone wants to destroy their organization.
Paul Gerardi suffers a tragic loss at the hands of his enemies. Now, he finds that nothing will stand in the way of his taking revenge on those responsible. He starts by seeking out Rasenberg and Klaus, angrily in search of a confrontation.
With the eager help of Karin Rasenberg, Gerardi discovers that her husband saved a member of the Royal family from a grave scandal. He has to seduce Karin further to get more information, which puts his own marriage on the line.
Paul Gerardi continues his research into World War II and discovers that a file for April '44 is missing. Meanwhile, Persigal is set up to be the scapegoat by the Prime Minister's office which is infiltrated by Salamander member Vincent Noel.
After an intense investigation, the origins of the Salamander are revealed, as are the details of what happened to the money. Meanwhile, Wolfs and Gerardi have a confrontation with a gunman that takes an unexpected turn.
Wolfs tells Klaus to send the incriminating material they stole to all 66 owners of the safes. Mysterious circumstances befall these owners, all Beligum’s elite. Meanwhile, Sofie is enrolled at boarding school and meets Wolfs’ granddaughter.
Gerardi narrowly escapes yet another attempt on his life. Meanwhile the Public Prosecutor informs Noel that he is planning to resign. He then finds that his office has been searched and needs to tip off Gerardi that his location might be compromised.
